She is known for her deeply personal films that explore issues such as gender, race, and diaspora. Much of her work explores Korean culture in an explicitly self-reflexive and emotive way. Kim's first noted documentary was Gina Kim's Video Diary, begun in 1995 when she had recently arrived in Los Angeles, and completed in 2002.
