A movie of epic narrative about General Shapovalov. Having lost his son and best friend, commander Gaidabura, during the war, he meets at the end of the war his favorite woman, whom he thought was dead.

The film traces the path of the hero (formerly an ensign and a Knight of St. George, and then a talented commander of the Red Army) from the Civil War to the Great Patriotic War.
